The multi-billion naira Ado Bayero Bridge at Zaira road in Kano has again cracked, which raised yet another concern of traffic issues by commuters.
The bridge which joins Kano with Maiduguri and Zaria roads earlier also developed a crack that was fixed some years ago and was commissioned in 2014 by the Federal Government.
The Supervising Engineer of the company which built the bridge, ibrin Sa’idu, described the defect as a ‘Punch’ which took place on one of the lanes of the dual carriage bridge.
Sa’idu, who spoke as a spokesperson for Abdulsalam Dayyabu-Kurfi, while representing the Federal Controller of Works in Kano, Yahaya Baba-Ali, stated the company would move its equipment soon to fix the issue.
He further gave an assurance that the company would find a long-lasting solution to this problem.
Sa’idu further wondered how the fault that exposed a few layers of the bridge, including the road, should occur again as it was reconstructed eight years earlier.
He further explained that it was not an engineering defect but a fault that took place because of prolonged tear and wear on the bridge.
In his comment, the Federal Controller of Works in Kano State, Yahaya Baba-Ali, attributed the damaged parts of the bridge to heavy trucks plying the bridge.
The Controller stated that the security agents would be stationed at the bridge to disallow huge vehicles from plying it to prevent any further damage.
He gave an assurance that the work of rehabilitation on the bridge would start as soon as possible.
