Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign following the abduction of 25 students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno State.
The outspoken musician made the demand on Wednesday in a post on X, drawing parallels between Tinubu’s current predicament and his own past criticism of former President Goodluck Jonathan during the height of Boko Haram attacks in 2014.
Falz referenced a tweet posted by Tinubu in November 2014, seven months after the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls, in which Tinubu criticised Jonathan over escalating insecurity and urged him to step down.
“Why should any part of this country be under occupation? In any civilized country Jonathan should resign,” Tinubu had posted at the time.
Echoing Tinubu’s words from a decade ago, Falz wrote: “You have consistently shown your unwillingness to protect the lives and property of our people despite pretending to care in the past.
RESIGN NOW!” The activist added that Tinubu’s previous arguments about leadership failure and the duty of the Presidency to protect citizens now apply squarely to his own administration.
The attack on the Kebbi school, where gunmen reportedly killed a vice principal and abducted 25 female students, has triggered nationwide outrage and renewed concerns about Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
The kidnapping bears similarities to earlier mass abductions in the North, raising fears that terrorists and armed groups are regaining strength despite repeated assurances from the government.
Compounding the situation is the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba, a senior military officer, during a violent encounter with insurgents in Borno State. Security analysts say the two incidents underscore the broader deterioration of security across the northern regions amid persistent banditry, insurgency and kidnapping.
Falz noted that Tinubu had not only tweeted about insecurity in 2014 but also made strong public statements accusing the Jonathan administration of lacking vision, capacity and sincerity in tackling terrorism.
During a campaign stop in Ilorin in 2014, Tinubu had said: “They have exhibited failure, lack of capacity, vision and creativity; the lie of yesterday is what they repeat today. If you control the armed forces… why should any part of this country be under occupation?”
Those remarks formed part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) strategy in the 2015 elections, during which insecurity became a central campaign theme, ultimately helping the party unseat the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
By invoking Tinubu’s own words, Falz has reignited public debate over political accountability and whether leaders should be held to the same standards they once championed.
Many Nigerians on social media have praised the musician for speaking out, while supporters of the government argue that the current administration needs more time to stabilize the country.
As outrage continues to grow, the government has yet to issue a detailed response to Falz’s demand, but officials have condemned the Kebbi attack and promised intensified efforts to secure the release of the abducted students.
