Enugu: Women Network to support female candidates in 2023 elections

A network of women-led organisation in Nigeria, known as “Women Support Women”, has disclosed their plans to fully support credible female candidates during Enugu State elections ahead of the 2023 general election.

The network, which has over 130 organisations, has continued to demand for more involvement of women in government, particularly in winning the elective positions in the state.

Onyinye Mama, who is the coordinator of the group, stated during a press conference in Enugu that it was time for females to be provided with their proper place in politics as well so they could adequately contribute toward the development of the state.

She further stated that women’s involvement in policy making is crucial as they are empathic and, therefore, can give the required solutions to the challenges of the country.

She said, “Today we are talking with a formidable voice to help women who we believe have proved their value at their workplace; women who we think will transform the stereotype of the system.”

“We are supporting women who qualify on merit to challenge their male partners. We want to have women in the three senatorial zones having strategic positions.”

“I want to make it clear that Women Supporting Women is not under any political organisation, it is nonpartisan, it is not citizen-driven but women-driven. We are supporting and helping credible women.”

The group further demanded to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and other political leaders in the state to assure that the number of women present at the State House of Assembly is increased from four to at least eight.

These organisations are now a days supporting women in parts of Nigeria because the nation is not as advanced as other countries in the world and does not give women their rightful place in the society or even in the workplace.
