Dominica: PM Roosevelt Skerrit announces beginning of drilling for reinjection well for Geothermal plant

Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, recently took to his social media account to share an update regarding the Geothermal development in Dominica. The Prime Minister noted that the geothermal development in Dominica has moved to a new stage. He shared that drilling of the reinjection well started on Friday, March 10, 2023.

The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, recently took to his social media account to share an update regarding the Geothermal development in Dominica. The Prime Minister noted that the geothermal development in Dominica has moved to a new stage. He shared that drilling of the reinjection well started on Friday, March 10, 2023.

The Prime Minister announced that the reinjection well would be drilled to a depth of up to 1500m. However, he also clarified that they might have to decrease the depth of the well depending on what the drillers find in the land as drilling goes along. The process of drilling will last for more than 28 days. During the previous year (2022), the authorities successfully completed the construction of the production well.

Following the completion, reinjection well was the next step in the project. Prime Minister Skerrit shared that the reinjection well is integral to any geothermal power plant. The project is taking form in Laudat village in Roseau Valley. The Dominica Geothermal Development Company is spearheading the project. The Dominica Geothermal Development Company is owned and managed by the government of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced before the start of the project that the government chose Iceland Drilling Company for the contract to drill two additional wells. The construction has started for well-pads and access roads. Ever since, the government has been working tirelessly to complete the project. In early January, the construction of at least one production well was completed.

The production well is showing remarkable results in terms of pressure, temperature and permeability. With the start of the drilling process on the reinjection well, the government hopes that the drilling will complete by April after which they can start the construction of the geothermal power plant. After the completion of the project, Laudat village in Roseau Valley will have a 10 MW geothermal energy plant
