The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria has launched an investigation into controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, following his claims of bribery involving officials of the commission.
Bobrisky, who has gained notoriety for his public persona, was flown to Abuja for questioning after failing to respond to prior invitations from the EFCC.
The investigation comes on the heels of a viral audio recording, released by activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, in which Bobrisky purportedly claimed to have bribed EFCC officials with N15 million to drop ongoing money laundering charges against him.
In the audio, Bobrisky allegedly asserts that unnamed officials accepted the sum in exchange for favorable treatment regarding his legal troubles.
Sources within the EFCC indicated that Bobrisky’s interrogation commenced immediately upon his arrival in Abuja, where he was reportedly questioned for several hours.
As of 8:30 PM on Friday, he was still in custody, with the anti-graft agency scrutinizing his claims in the context of its ongoing investigations into corruption.
EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed Bobrisky’s transportation to Abuja and noted the seriousness of the allegations.
“Bobrisky could face fresh charges if it is determined that his claims against the commission are false,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of accountability within the agency.
Bobrisky’s summons to the EFCC followed a contentious interaction at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, where he was prevented from boarding an Amsterdam-bound flight on Thursday night.
He alleged that immigration officers physically assaulted him during the incident, which he shared with his followers on Instagram, citing injuries sustained during the altercation.
The EFCC has previously dismissed Bobrisky’s allegations, asserting that the case was legally closed and indicating the establishment of a panel to further investigate the matter.
This dismissal comes amid a broader crackdown on financial crimes and corruption in Nigeria, as the commission seeks to maintain its integrity in the public eye.
Activist Martins Otse’s involvement has amplified the situation, as he has positioned himself as a vocal critic of corruption in Nigeria. His actions have sparked public interest and debate regarding the integrity of the EFCC and its operations.
According to insiders, Bobrisky’s failure to attend prior summonses to substantiate his allegations played a pivotal role in his recent arrest.
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to addressing any corruption claims seriously, ensuring that all individuals are held accountable for their actions, regardless of their public stature.
As the investigation continues, Bobrisky’s future remains uncertain. He faces the potential of serious legal repercussions if found guilty of fabricating claims against the EFCC.
The unfolding events serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Nigeria in combating corruption, as high-profile figures are increasingly scrutinized for their actions.
The outcome of this case could have significant implications for both Bobrisky and the EFCC as it navigates this complex landscape of public perception and accountability.
