A yet-to-be-identified driver was arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Sunday after recklessly ramming into a pedestrian in the busy Mile 2 area, resulting in significant bodily injuries to the victim.
According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the incident occurred when the driver, behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry with the registration number KTU 447 EV, sped through a congested section of the road near Ewenla/Charity, heading towards Mile 2.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver was moving at a dangerously high speed, which ultimately led to the collision.
Taofiq described the scene, stating, “Tragically, the driver’s negligent actions resulted in the grievous injury of a pedestrian, who sustained severe bodily harm after being struck by the vehicle.”
The victim suffered serious injuries across multiple parts of his body and was promptly transported to Comfort Hospital in the Mafoluku area of Oshodi for urgent medical treatment.
Operatives of LASTMA, who were present at the scene, acted swiftly to rescue the injured pedestrian. They provided immediate assistance before rushing the victim to the hospital.
Meanwhile, the driver was apprehended at the scene of the accident and was later handed over to police officers from the Mafoluku Police Station for further investigation and prosecution.
“The driver of the Toyota Camry was subsequently apprehended by LASTMA officers at the scene, and following due procedure, both the driver and the vehicle were handed over to the police for further inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” Taofiq explained.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep concern over the incident and reiterated the necessity for motorists to exercise caution while driving. In a statement conveyed through Taofiq, he emphasized the agency’s commitment to strict adherence to traffic laws in Lagos State.
“LASTMA authorities urged all road users to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, emphasizing that the safety of pedestrians and fellow motorists is paramount,” Bakare-Oki said.
He extended heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery to the victim, highlighting the agency’s ongoing efforts to enforce road safety measures in the region.
This incident follows another alarming event reported last Friday, where an unidentified driver narrowly escaped death after a 40-foot container fell in the same Mile 2 area of Lagos State.
Taofiq noted that the accident occurred around 5 PM last Thursday, impacting a black Toyota Jeep with the number plate AAA 144 GU. Fortunately, the driver of the Jeep escaped uninjured, although the driver of the container truck sustained severe injuries.
As incidents of reckless driving continue to pose significant dangers on Lagos roads, LASTMA remains committed to enforcing traffic regulations and promoting safer driving practices among all road users.
