An unidentified social media account, suspected to be run by a sexual rape/misconduct victim, has circulated how a well-known University of Cape Town has failed to fire a professor who has been accused of violating a student.
It is alleged by an unidentified/anonymous social media account that the victim was raped inside UCT’s premises and that the university has not yet suspended the lecturer.
But the reaction of UCT Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng has left many shocked as she tweeted that the victim had an agenda after she declined assistance from the university.
Using the anonymous social media account, the alleged victim states that the university has ordered them to keep the matter “internal” and not disclose it. They also say they are under witness protection.
In a statement, UCT confirms that the matter has been filed at the police station and is subject to various investigations, one criminal with the police and via the Western Cape Health Department, to which the alleged offender is an employee of both the government and the university, via a bilateral agreement.
The anonymous account named RAPEDUCT1 has been trying its way to get the matter out and tweeted last week, “Raped and tortured on-premises. UCT is aware, but VC wants to assure I’m silenced. Another rape, up for grabs to be muted and threatened!!
Phakeng was tagged in one of its tweets, and she seemed to scoff at the abuse allegations by the student.
Phakeng tweeted, “This pupil has rejected help from the university. She must say what her real agenda is”.
In another tweet, Phakeng suggests that the student has refused help for more than three years.
“Please help her as he has rejected all help from us. It has been three years. Maybe she will accept help from you. With us, she likes to pop up every now and then to make this allegation against me,” she said.
Phakeng has been highly condemned for her response to the allegations.
On the other hand, in its media statement, UCT has not confirmed whether the perpetrator had been suspended or not from the university.
