The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a female passenger and the injury of six others in a tragic accident on Sunday morning in the Majidun area of Ikorodu.
According to a statement released by LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the crash involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with the number plate EPE 494 XM and a stationary tipper truck positioned along the roadside.
Taofiq explained that the commercial bus was transporting a group of passengers to a scheduled programme in Ogijo when the driver lost control due to sudden brake failure. The vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the stationary tipper truck.
“Preliminary inquiries have established that the ill-fated commercial bus experienced an abrupt brake failure,” Taofiq said. “The driver, who was reportedly travelling at a dangerously excessive speed, consequently lost control and forcefully collided with a tipper truck positioned at the roadside for diesel purchase.”
The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the immediate death of an adult female passenger seated inside the bus. Five female passengers and one male occupant sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders quickly evacuated the victims. According to LASTMA, the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment, while the deceased was transported to Ikorodu General Hospital for official documentation and further procedures.
Taofiq added that the drivers of both vehicles have been arrested and handed over to the police. Authorities have begun a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the mechanical condition of the commercial bus and the positioning of the stationary tipper truck.
LASTMA urged motorists to prioritise vehicle maintenance and adhere to speed regulations, warning that many fatal crashes in the state stem from mechanical failures and reckless driving. The agency reiterated its commitment to maintaining road safety and preventing avoidable tragedies on Lagos roads.
