Officials and Lecturers of Public universities under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as well as the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have stated they are not calling off the industrial actions soon as the Federal Government has not yet reached a firm agreement with them.
ASUU and the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU are on strike currently, the former since April 14 and the latter since February 14, 2022.
The unions resolved to industrial activities to restate their demands for implementing agreements signed with the Federal Government, including enhanced welfare and better working conditions.
The national leaders of the unions, Mohammed Ibrahim and Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, stated the meeting the Federal government, stakeholders in the educational sector, and religious leaders had with ASUU and the JAC of SSANU and NASU did not generate strong agreements.
This is against what the MNgige had said Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, in a report given during last weekend.
Ngige had said, “We had a pleasant and fruitful discussion; we looked towards the issues dispassionately and reached some agreements, to the satisfaction of everybody in presence,”
Osodeke called Ngige’s claim a political statement; however, he said, “We are not aware that we are calling off the strike.”
Ibrahim highlighted that the only progress reported during the meeting was President Buhari’s order of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to perform integrity tests on the three platforms: University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS), Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS) and University Peculiar Payroll Payment System, and submit the results in three weeks.
Ibrahim said, “We are not talking about calling off strike now.”
The meeting was headed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.
