Abuja – Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an anchor at Arise News, has tragically died after jumping from the top floor of her Katampe apartment during an armed robbery on Monday, the Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, CP Ajao Adewale, confirmed.
According to Vanguard reports, vigilantes in the compound informed neighbours that Maduagwu was found unconscious after falling onto the hard cemented floor. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Speaking on Arise TV, CP Adewale stated that police officers arrived at the scene to find Maduagwu unconscious. She was immediately taken to Maitama General Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive her using CPR, but she sadly did not survive.
“The robbers invaded Unique Apartment, a three-story twin building with 18 flats, located around the Gishiri axis of Katampe, under the Mabushi Divisional Area,” CP Adewale explained.
He added that two private security guards were on duty during the attack. One guard attempted to confront the robbers and sustained a gunshot wound in the process. “In the panic that followed, Maduagwu, who lived on the topmost floor, jumped from the third storey. The consequences were tragic and very unfortunate,” he said.
Authorities have set up a dedicated investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), to track down the suspects. CP Adewale assured that “no stone will be left unturned until the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
“The leads we are getting are already being worked on, and all tactical units are involved in ensuring the culprits are apprehended,” he stated.
The FCT Police Command expressed condolences to Maduagwu’s family, colleagues at Arise News, and all Nigerians affected by the incident. “We commiserate with the family of Sommie, the Arise News family, and Nigerians deeply touched by this ugly and disturbing incident,” Adewale added.
Residents of the Unique Apartment compound have expressed shock and grief over the tragic event. Vigilantes and neighbours confirmed the intensity of the robbery and the desperate circumstances that led to Maduagwu’s fatal jump.
This incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding security measures in residential complexes across Abuja. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant while the police continue to pursue leads on the attackers.
Maduagwu’s death has sparked widespread mourning across media circles and social media, with colleagues remembering her professionalism and dedication as a news anchor.
Police investigations remain ongoing as the search for the armed robbers continues. The FCT Command has pledged full cooperation with the public to ensure justice is served.
