The Nigeria chapter of Amnesty International, a human rights association operational in the country, is celebrating women across the globe. Accordingly, The association is spreading awareness about women’s issues and problems in the physical and digital world. In line with this, Amnesty International is hosting an interactive session on Instagram on Combating Online Gender-Based Violence. The session will take place on Saturday, March 25.
As per reports, Executive Director at TechHerNG, Chioma Agwuegbo, and Yvonne Ogwulu, Product Designer and Founder of Tech Girl Magic Initiative will host the digital space. Amnesty International Nigeria believes that it is their joint responsibility to ensure that women and girls are safe, both in physical and online spaces. Accordingly, they have hosted the Instagram live, which will provide women from all walks of life with critical information about how they can keep themselves safe in the digital environment.
According to Amnesty International, to foster a community where women can thrive, create and innovate, the authorities need to assure them that they are safe. The International Human Rights Organization asserted that Social Media platforms are where violence and abuse against women flourish, often with little accountability. The Instagram live hosted by Chioma Agwuegbo and Yvonne Ogwulu will discuss how to combat online gender-based violence.Â
Meanwhile, Amnesty International is engaged in their commitment to safeguarding the human rights of all the people in the community, during march 2023 they are observing a month-long celebration of International women’s day, under which they are hosting several events to make women aware of their rights and how they can protect themselves in an unwanted situation.
Additionally, Amnesty International believes that no girl or women should experience direct or indirect threats of physical or sexual violence, especially in the digital world. The session will serve as an opportunity for the women to share their experiences and get valuable advice from accomplished women across the globe. Accordingly, Amnesty International Nigeria believes that no girl should experience:
- Sexist and misogynistic abuse
- Targeted harassment
- Cyber-stalking
- Violation of privacy in the form of dissemination sexual or private images without consent.
