Terrorists who attacked and abducted passengers on an Abuja-Kaduna train have released a woman who was pregnant from their confinement on compassionate grounds.
News regarding the release of the woman came on the night of Saturday, May 14, and a security source has confirmed that no ransom was paid to this effect.
The woman, who appeared in a black Muslim dress, putting on a face mask, said that the terrorists freed her due to her condition.
The lady, whose name has not been revealed, was seen pleading with the authorities in a video to negotiate with the kidnappers regarding the release of others who are still in captivity of the kidnappers.
She also claimed that the people are being taken care of with medicine and food.
It was also said that the news of a woman giving birth while in captivity was not true. The Abuja-Kaduna train attack, which took place on March 28, sparked national calls for a review of Nigeria’s security structure yet again. Eight passengers were found to be killed in the incident. Also, 168 others had been abducted or declared missing.
The attack and kidnapping were just one of many by armed groups targeting significant transport links and communities around northern Nigeria in recent years and was the most significant targeting of the train line falling between Abuja and a major city in northern Nigeria since it started operating in 2016.
Families of the captives have severally asked the Federal Government to do all they can to safeguard the release of their family and friends.
So far, the woman is the third person to regain her freedom since their abduction. Earlier, on April 6, Alwan Hassan, the Managing Director of the Bank of Agriculture, was also freed by the terrorists after payment of an N100 million ransom.
