The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced a further extension of the grace period for enforcing the tinted glass permit requirement for vehicles across Nigeria. The new enforcement date is now set for October 2, 2025.
The decision, according to the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, comes in response to a significant surge in permit applications through the official portal. This trend, Adejobi noted, demonstrates increased public compliance with the directive issued earlier this year.
“The Inspector General of Police has approved a further extension of the grace period for the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit requirement for vehicles with tinted windows, with the new enforcement date now set for October 2, 2025,” Adejobi said in a statement on Monday.
He explained that the move is intended to give authorities ample time to meticulously scrutinise each application, ensuring permits are issued strictly to eligible and qualified individuals, in accordance with national security guidelines.
“This decision follows a significant surge in applications via the official portal, reflecting heightened public compliance with the directive. In light of this, the Force considers it imperative to allow sufficient time for the meticulous scrutiny of applications to ensure that the permit is issued only to eligible and qualified individuals, in line with national security considerations,” he added.
The Police spokesperson further stated that the extended deadline would also enable improvements in both digital and physical verification processes. This, he said, is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the permit system and preventing fraudulent use.
Tinted glass permits in Nigeria have long been regulated due to security concerns, with authorities insisting that unrestricted use could aid criminal activities. While some vehicle owners install tinted windows for comfort and privacy, the police maintain that proper vetting is necessary to ensure such modifications do not compromise public safety.
The IGP first directed the review and reactivation of the permit system in 2022, introducing a more streamlined online application process. However, enforcement deadlines have been adjusted multiple times to accommodate public response and system upgrades.
Motorists who fail to obtain the required permit by the enforcement date risk penalties, including fines, vehicle impoundment, and possible prosecution.
The police have urged applicants to use only the official application portal and warned against patronising unauthorised agents. Adejobi reassured the public that the Nigerian Police Force remains committed to balancing security imperatives with citizens’ convenience.
With the new October 2025 deadline, authorities expect all pending applications to be processed, while security agencies will continue monitoring compliance levels ahead of full enforcement.
