Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has opened up about the transformative impact of his decision to switch international allegiance from England to Nigeria, describing it as one of the most defining choices of his football career.
In an interview with ARISE TV, the newly crowned 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year reflected on how representing Nigeria reshaped not only his professional trajectory but also his personal identity.
“Without doubt, it changed my career and my life,” Lookman said. “People know that. This is my home. This is my place. I enjoy it here. I am the son of the soil.”
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Lookman represented England at various youth levels, including the U-20 team that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017.
However, in 2022, the 27-year-old forward made the pivotal decision to play for Nigeria at the senior level. The switch has since coincided with a meteoric rise in his career.
Lookman played a central role in Atalanta’s historic 2024 UEFA Europa League triumph, scoring a sensational hat-trick in the final against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
His treble not only secured Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy but also etched his name into the record books as one of the few players to net a hat-trick in a European final.
That landmark performance, alongside a stellar season with the Serie A club, saw Lookman become the first Nigerian to win the CAF African Footballer of the Year award since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.
Crediting his success to a relentless drive and a strong work ethic, Lookman emphasised the importance of discipline, self-belief, and daily improvement.
“I think it was just self-belief and working hard every day,” he said. “When you work hard every single day, you gain confidence and grow in what you do. You know that eventually, your hard work will pay off.”
The journey has not always been smooth. Lookman recalled some of the more challenging periods of his career, notably during a loan spell at Fulham where he missed a decisive penalty in a Premier League match. However, he said those experiences were crucial in shaping his resilient mindset.
“Every day, I try to improve myself, both on and off the pitch. That consistency and mindset have really helped me,” Lookman said.
Now a key figure in both Atalanta’s attacking setup and Nigeria’s national team, Lookman’s decision to embrace his heritage has earned him admiration from fans across the continent.
His recent performances in the Africa Cup of Nations and European competitions have further cemented his status as one of the most in-form attackers in world football.
Reflecting on his CAF award, Lookman described it as a deeply emotional and humbling moment.
“It’s amazing. Honestly, I won’t lie to you, it’s a privilege to have it,” he said.
As he looks ahead to future challenges with Nigeria and Atalanta, Lookman stands as a shining example of how embracing one’s roots can unlock untapped potential and lead to greatness on the world stage.
