CALABAR— Tragedy struck in Calabar, Cross River State, as a police inspector, identified as Effiong Bassey, went on a shooting spree early Tuesday morning, killing one civilian and injuring two others. The incident, which unfolded at the Atakpa Divisional Police Station, has left the community in shock.
According to reports, the violent episode began around 6 a.m. when Inspector Bassey returned from a night duty at a Microfinance Bank in Calabar South.
Eyewitnesses stated that upon arrival at the station, he exhibited strange behavior and refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle, which he had used during his shift.
A security source who spoke on the condition of anonymity revealed that the inspector became aggressive and threatened his colleagues.
“Inspector Bassey, who had been on duty overnight at a Microfinance Bank, began acting hostile and erratic upon his return. He blocked the entrance to the station, preventing anyone from going in or out. Attempts by fellow officers to calm him down and retrieve his weapon peacefully were unsuccessful,” the source disclosed.
As tensions escalated, a tactical police team was dispatched to contain the situation. However, upon seeing the reinforcement, Bassey reportedly became even more agitated and opened fire indiscriminately, hitting three people.
Among those shot was Mrs. Ijoema Obot, a 41-year-old woman and the wife of a retired police officer. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries at the police clinic, while the other two victims are currently receiving medical treatment.
Authorities have since taken control of the situation, and the suspect has been apprehended. Confirming the development, Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, stated that the matter was under investigation.
“The situation is under control. The suspect has been arrested, and the injured victims are being treated as we speak,” Ugbo assured.
