In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigerian parties, commonly known as owambes, have undergone significant changes, not just in the food served but in the entire experience.
What was once a celebration of lavish feasts and multiple drink choices has been scaled down, primarily due to the economic downturn that has made hosting such events increasingly expensive.
Before the pandemic, it was common for owambe hosts to serve a variety of foods, including jollof rice, swallows, and assorted meats, accompanied by soft drinks, beer, and alcoholic beverages.
However, with the soaring costs of these items, many party planners have had to get creative to maintain the spirit of celebration while cutting costs.
The latest shift in this trend is the surprising addition of agbo Jedi and libido booster herbs as alternatives to traditional beverages at these parties.
Agbo Jedi, traditionally used in households for treating piles, is a Yoruba herbal remedy that was rarely seen at social events.
However, in an attempt to curb rising costs, some Nigerians are now opting for these herbal drinks at owambes. Agbo Jedi, along with libido-boosting herbs, has become a common feature in many recent ceremonies.
Mrs. Habibat Jolaosho, a businesswoman whose daughter recently tied the knot, shared her experience of serving agbo Jedi and libido boosters at her daughter’s wedding.
“Everyone knows that the cost of buying a pack of soft drinks, beer, and alcoholic wine is very expensive. Even water is no longer a cheap option,” she remarked.
According to Mrs. Jolaosho, the decision was born out of necessity, as the total cost of a small party with just 100 guests could easily exceed N1 million naira today.
As the economic challenges in Nigeria continue to deepen, the trend of using herbs like agbo Jedi at parties is gaining traction.
These herbs are not only seen as cost-effective but are also believed by some to offer health benefits, with agbo Jedi being known for its purported ability to treat piles and improve general well-being.
Libido boosters, on the other hand, are considered by some as a fun and exotic addition to the menu, aimed at adding a unique touch to the festivities.
Despite these changes, owambes continue to serve as an important aspect of Nigerian culture, bringing people together to celebrate life’s milestones, though with a growing sense of frugality.
The ongoing economic strain is likely to push more party hosts to consider less conventional options, such as herbal drinks, to meet the needs of their guests without breaking the bank.
While the shift may seem unconventional to some, it is a reflection of how the realities of Nigeria’s economic climate are reshaping not only the way people celebrate but also the way they approach daily living.
