Asaba—Severe flooding has submerged several communities in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, including Abala-Oshimili, Umuoru, Adia-Obiaka, Ase, and Onya, leaving many residents displaced from their homes.
The situation has escalated in recent days due to incessant rainfall and rising water levels, prompting the River Niger and its adjoining creeks to overflow their banks.
The flooding has severely impacted local agriculture, with farmlands completely overtaken by water.
Farmers have been forced to undertake last-minute efforts to harvest their yams, cassava, plantains, and other crops prematurely, risking significant economic losses.
“We have no choice but to salvage whatever we can before the flood renders everything useless,” said one distressed farmer from Ase community.
Reports indicate that some residents have begun relocating to higher ground, while others have taken refuge on elevated platforms.
The urgent need for safe shelter has led many to seek temporary accommodations in public facilities.
“Ase has started submerging, and people have begun moving into the primary school, pending the establishment of IDP camps,” stated Mr. Clinton Omokaro, a local indigene.
Community leaders are raising alarms about the dire situation. Mr. John Alibofi, the Chairman of the Umuolu Community Development Committee, expressed his deep concern: “The flood has taken over my area and has submerged many homes.
Some people are no longer sleeping in their homes.” He emphasized the urgent need for governmental assistance to address the flooding and provide support for those displaced.
The Ndokwa East Local Government Area Chairman, Mr. Vincent Osilonya, confirmed that Abala-Oshimili is the worst-hit community, with many residents evacuated to upland areas for safety. “We are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of our people and are in contact with state authorities for further assistance,” he said.
The Delta State government is yet to issue an official response regarding the flooding, but residents are calling for immediate intervention to provide relief and support for those affected. As the water continues to rise, the risk of further displacement and loss of property grows.
The flooding in Ndokwa East serves as a stark reminder of the impact of climate change and the need for robust disaster management strategies.
