Some scientists in Nigeria have advocated discovering a long-lasting scientific solution and strategy to acquire sustainable food security, as it is necessary for the country’s survival and eradication of hunger.
According to the statistics, they further highlighted that there might be serious challenges regarding food waiting to occur in Nigeria if immediate action is not taken to lessen the glitches being faced by Nigeria’s agriculture industry.
The scientists told this when Nigeria Prize for Science team declared it has got 107 entries from scientists around the world for the 2022 edition, which is sponsored by Nigeria NLNG Limited, named ‘innovations in sustainable food security.
Chaired by Prof. Barth Nnaji, former Minister of Power, the Advisory Board for the prize passed over the 107 entries to the judges, headed by Prof. Christian Ugwu Agbo, from the Department of Agriculture, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Andy Odeh, NLNG General Manager for External Relations and Sustainable Development, represented by the acting Manager, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, Mrs Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku said that scientists are required now, more than ever before in the nation’s history, to wade off a major food crisis that would affect negatively sustainable development goals.
He also said that NLNG is very eager to ensure that Nigeria Prize for Science creates opportunities for positive effects in all spheres of life in Nigeria.
“This is why we are carrying constant improvement steps to restore and rekindle the drive for development and to make a better Nigeria, in line with our company’s vision,” he said
Odeh illustrated that the programme was their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to give back to the community where they work.
He said, “This is because our idea of being a globally competitive LNG Company assisting in making a better Nigeria relies on promoting excellence everywhere we see it. And no country can develop without excellence in science/innovation and the arts/humanities.”
