Nigeria: More than 600 inmates fled the prisons in Kuje local government area in Nigeria on late Tuesday night, July 5, stated Dr Shuaib Belgore, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
Belgore further said that those behind this attack were the Boko Haram terrorist group members who came particularly for their members held in custody.
However, he stated that 300 had been recaptured while 300 were still at large.
While speaking in a press briefing, he also stated an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps was also killed during this attack.
There have been many attacks on the prison, but most of them were repelled, but now and then, there is one attack that they have managed to succeed.
During the attack yesterday, the terrorists came well prepared with high explosives, and the initial entry attempt by them was unsuccessful. Still, later they attacked another part of the wall with a higher-grade bomb that brought down the wall.
The authorities on the group did everything in their power to repel them, but the vast number they came with was huge, which they were unable to defend.
The police authorities kept fighting with them, but unfortunately, many prisoners managed to escape. Reinforcements came when they were halfway through it, and they were eventually stopped.
When the Boko Haram terrorist group came in, they killed one NSCDC operative as he was trying to save the situation. The prisoners in the jail were 994.
Dr Shuaib Belgore said that they understand that the Boko Haram terrorist group came particularly for their conspirators.
“Many of them have come back, and some were retrieved from the bushes they were concealing, right now, we have retrieved about 300 out of about 600 that managed to escape from the jail,” he further said.
