Forty-eight containers of captured and condemned pharmaceutical products have been demolished by the NAFDAC – National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control, NDLEA – the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Department of State Services managed by the Nigeria Customs Service at the waste destruction site of Lagos Waste Management Authority in Epe, Lagos State.
Speaking with the reported at the destruction site on Thursday, July 28, the Assistant Controller General of Customs in charge of Enforcement, Inspection and Investigation, Usman Dankingari, stated that unregulated drugs like the ones already being destroyed are fuelling kidnapping, banditry and insecurity in the nation.
This type of drug fuels banditry, terrorism, armed robbery and insecurity in the nation.
This is the reason the Federal Government, via the Customs and NAFDAC, regularly mop up these drugs from circulation.
It is as per the basis of this that Col Hammed Ali (Rtd), the Controller General of Customs, instructed us to come and destroy these illegal drugs in partnership with other government agencies.
For today, they are destroying eight containers of these drugs. In total, they had 48 containers of medicines that would be destroyed during the coming days.
These drugs came into the nation as import units but were captured after examination disclosed that they are substandard as well as fake.
These are drugs that do not have any expiry or manufacturing date on them.
These drugs did not pass via NAFDAC regulation and have everything written on them in foreign languages that Nigerians would not be able to read.
