The Tripartite Committee tasked with negotiating the National Minimum Wage, NNMW, finds itself mired in deadlock once again. Following a walkout by Labour representatives last Tuesday, accusing the government of frivolity in negotiations, hopes for a swift resolution have dwindled.
Accusations fly, with fingers pointed squarely at state governors for allegedly stalling progress. The latest chapter in this saga unfolds as the committee reconvenes today after a series of adjournments and discord.
The crux of the matter lies in the disparity between Labour’s demands and the offers tabled by both the government and the Organized Private Sector (OPS).
Since May 15, when Labour initially walked out over a government offer of N48,000, the negotiations have stumbled from one impasse to another.
The latest government offer marginally increased to N60,000 from N57,000, but it failed to bridge the chasm between the parties.
Labour’s steadfast demand of N615,000 stands in stark contrast to the proposals on the table. With such a gaping divide, finding common ground seems increasingly elusive.
Ekpo Nta, member and Secretary of the committee representing the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, extended an olive branch through a letter dated May 29. In it, he called for the resumption of talks, scheduling the 7th meeting for today, May 31, 2024.
The venue, Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall at the Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja, serves as the battleground for these crucial negotiations. However, the shadow of discord looms large, threatening to overshadow any semblance of progress.
In a nod to the challenges posed by physical attendance, Nta included a ‘Zoom link’ for remote participation, acknowledging the constraints faced by some members.
Yet, whether physical or virtual, the task remains daunting – to bridge the ideological chasm and reach a consensus acceptable to all parties.
The ramifications of failure are dire. A nationwide strike, set to commence on Monday, hangs like the sword of Damocles over the nation.
The specter of disrupted services halted industries, and economic upheaval looms large, casting a pall over the already fragile socio-economic landscape.
