Police Issue Warning Ahead of June 12: Violence in Demonstrations Discouraged

The statement, issued just twenty-four hours before the scheduled Democracy Day celebration, highlighted recent efforts by unspecified groups to organize mass protests across the country

As Nigeria prepares to commemorate its Democracy Day on June 12, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning against any planned nationwide violent protests.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations while condemning any form of violence or destruction of property.

The statement, issued just twenty-four hours before the scheduled Democracy Day celebration, highlighted recent efforts by unspecified groups to organize mass protests across the country.

While affirming citizens’ right to peaceful assembly, the NPF reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of all individuals and preventing the infringement of others’ liberties.

“Peaceful protest is a fundamental right of every citizen,” declared ACP Adejobi. “However, it is imperative that such demonstrations remain peaceful and do not result in the destruction of lives and properties. The Nigeria Police Force will not tolerate any form of violence disguised as a protest.”

The warning comes amidst growing concerns over potential unrest and civil disobedience on Democracy Day, a significant date commemorating Nigeria’s transition to democratic governance in 1999.

With tensions running high and various groups mobilizing for action, the NPF emphasized the need for responsible conduct and adherence to the rule of law.

“The NPF stands ready to facilitate peaceful protests by providing necessary security measures,” stated ACP Adejobi. “Citizens intending to exercise their right to protest are urged to inform the police and seek their protection.

However, those who choose to engage in unlawful activities will face legal consequences.”
Of particular concern to law enforcement authorities is the threat of disrupting critical infrastructure, including the national power grid and essential services such as airports and hospitals.

The NPF warned that any attempt to sabotage key facilities would be treated as a serious offense, potentially constituting a treasonable felony and jeopardizing national security.

“The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police and State Command Commissioners of Police to collaborate with other security agencies,” the statement continued.

“Efforts will be coordinated to prevent any disruption of critical infrastructure and ensure public safety during the upcoming protests.”

As Nigeria prepares to mark another milestone in its democratic journey, the message from law enforcement is clear: while the right to protest is respected, violence and unlawful behaviour will not be tolerated.

With the nation’s eyes on the upcoming Democracy Day celebrations, the NPF remains vigilant in maintaining law and order, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
