The head coach position for Nigeria’s Super Eagles continues to attract global interest, even as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) navigates financial constraints and weighs its options. Since February 2024, the role has been in flux, with three interim coaches stepping in to lead the three-time African champions.
Portuguese manager José Peseiro, who guided the team to a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, declined to renew his contract, sparking a leadership void.
His assistant, Finidi George, temporarily took the reins but resigned in June following disappointing performances. Austin Eguavoen has since served as interim coach, managing a commendable three wins, one loss, and a draw, while securing the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2025 AFCON.

“Eguavoen is doing well, but if we must engage a coach, we must make sure that the issue of payment is sorted,” Gusau stated, signaling the federation’s preference for a foreign tactician while acknowledging the financial hurdles.
