Nigeria Floods: 1.4 Million displaced, food and fuel supplies disrupted

Widespread floods in various states of Nigeria have caused many people to face difficulties and problems. According to official statistics, the floods have hit 27 of Nigeria’s 36 states and impacted around 1.4 million people.

The floods have been building up since the summer. According to some sources, Nigeria is facing the decade’s worst floods in 2022. According to two of Nigeria’s Ministries, the floods have left around 90,000 homes underwater.


Further, the ministries have also added that the floods have cut off supply lines for food and fuel. So Far, the authorities have reported more than 500 deaths due to the floods.

In a statement on Friday, October 14, 2022, the director general of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, stated, “The scale of the disaster …is colossal,”

Koji state is one of the worst-hit areas in Nigeria. On Thursday, a drone video emerged on the internet as proof of the same. The video featured visuals from Lokoja. The city is situated in the north-central Kogi state at the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers. Lokoja has suffered weeks of flooding. The video shows dozens of submerged homes and businesses.

A resident of the area, Khalid Yahaya Othman, said: “I have never seen such a thing,”. He spoke these words while looking at his submerged fuel tanks and waterlogged streets around him.

Floods in Nigeria have spelt trouble for more than just the affected personage. Due to the floods, supply lines for fuel and food have been disrupted.

The state oil company of Nigeria, NNPC blames the floods, which blocked a key road out of Lokoja, for a fuel shortage in the capital, Abuja.


Federal Road Safety official Koton Karfe said the floods had restricted the flow of traffic in and around the various cities of the nation for at least two weeks.
