Abuja, Nigeria – July 25, 2024 – The Nigerian government has successfully repatriated 158 irregular Nigerian migrants from Libya, according to a statement released by Nigeria’s Charge’ d’ Affaires to Libya, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, on Wednesday.
This recent operation marks the 12th evacuation exercise carried out by the Nigerian Mission in Libya this year.
The group of evacuees consists of 77 males, 45 females, 26 children, and 10 infants. This latest repatriation effort underscores the ongoing collaboration between Nigerian authorities and Libyan officials to address the plight of stranded Nigerians in the North African country.
Among the evacuees, 26 males were apprehended during a recent raid targeting undocumented foreigners in Libya. These individuals were subsequently released from the Abu-Salim Detention Centre in Tripoli.
The repatriation operation was facilitated under the auspices of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), specifically through the organization’s Voluntary Humanitarian Repatriation program.
Since the beginning of the year, a total of 1,776 stranded Nigerians have been brought back to their home country.
