The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, released the report on electoral reforms for the general access. With this, Prime Minister distributed copies of these reports to the public. The people hailed the prime minister’s gesture as part of his government’s mandate to promote accountability. Before the 2022 elections, the Prime Minister promised to introduce the electoral reforms.
On Wednesday, June 21, he presented the report of these electoral reforms to the people. The people of Dominica have been looking forward to the report for a long time. The publicization of the report is a significant event. Further, This is evident as the Prime Minister invited the people to provide their input. He presented copies of the electoral reforms report to the people.
At the same time, he noted that they are utilizing a “Nationalistic Approach” by presenting the report to the people. The groups who received copies of the report at the event o Wednesday include:
- Members of Parliament,
- Political Parties,
- NGOs,
- churches
- civil youth societies organizations
The government has designated time for the country’s people to reflect on the reports. Accordingly, Prime Minister Dr Skerrit urged the people to take the time to read the report. He asked them to return at the designated time and make their suggestions for the Electoral reforms.
Dr Roosevelt Skerrit added that the people’s perspective matters to the government. Accordingly, the people of the country can also access the document online. The government will host another interactive session for the people of the country. In this session, they will get the chance to share their views and inputs.
The prime minister acknowledged that no electoral system is perfect. Accordingly, he added that they would take into consideration every input. They will reflect on what is practical to implement for their limited human resources, financial resources, etc. The prime minister asserted that they want to implement these new regulations in time for the next general elections.
The prime minister asserted that he gave the document to the general public within the week of receiving it for himself. He confessed that he did not get the chance and opportunity to reflect on the report’s contents. He did not discuss the contents of the report with the people. Instead, he confessed that he thought it important to know the general public’s views.
Dr Drew added that before bringing the legislation to the national assembly, he wants to get the opportunity to get the opinion of the regional and international luminaries. The government will enact these legislations before the year’s end. This will come after the consultations with the general public.
