Bayelsa State receives relief material from UNICEF following floods

The Bayelsa State has recieved relief material to support the government’s health care effort for flood victims. The UNICEF made the donations to the government after the devastating floods in the region.

Ministry of Health of the Bayelsa state shaed the update on their facebook account. Commissioner for Health, Dr Pabara Netwon Igwele recieved the delivery of relief materials on behalf of the State Government. The material was worth over fifty million naira (50,000,000.00)

The commissioner of health recieved the relief materials on Monday, November 14, 2022, in his office, Ministry of Health, Yenagoa. Dr Igwele noted that the items received would be judiciously distributed to Bayelsans.

The health commissioner pointed out that the support of UNICEF in child and mother care in the State and for supporting the government’s efforts has been impactful. He stated that UNICEF was the first international body to reach out to the State at this dire time.

Commenting on the ravaging impacts of the flood, the Commissioner expressed concern for Bayelsans. The Bayelsans experienced losses of lives and properties. The commisoner further noted that one can not quantify the effects. According to him, the flood has brought significant challenges and burdens on the people.

Dr Igwele further explained that due to the untold damages caused by the flood, Bayelsans need to start all over again as their infrastructures, furniture and children’s books, and other educational materials, were destroyed.

Further, he said, “The challenges are enormous. I’m wearing the shoes, so I know how it pains and not to talk of those who can not even do a little, it is quite devastating”,

Presenting the relief materials to the health commissioner, the Head of the Port Harcourt Field Office of UNICEF, Dr Aslem Audu, stated that it was expedient for them to make the donation seeing the ravaging consequences of the flooding.

Sympathizing with the State Government, Audu noted that the State was impacted severely. He revealed that almost all Bayelsans were affected during the flood. Further, Audu added that UNICEF would partner with the State in post-flooding modalities to alleviate the impacts of the flooding on the people across the State.

Items donated include drugs, foot-wears, sanitary wear, detergents, toiletries, and insecticide-treated nets.
