The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has expressed his opinion on the UK’s ruling political party’s decision to appoint Rishi Sunak as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
President Buhari, the senior leader and head of the nation, termed this decision a milestone and inspiring for young people.
Reportedly, Sunak is the first Indian-origin leader of the nation. The 42-year-old politician is also the youngest prime minister of the United Kingdom in more than two centuries.
Taking this opportunity, the President of Nigeria called for more cooperation between Nigeria and the UK. He called for the two nations to strengthen “the enduring partnership and unbreakable friendship” among themselves.
Further, President Buhari has also stressed the need “to increase trade and investment within and between Commonwealth countries to boost the health and wealth of all our peoples.”
Nigeria, which has the largest population in Africa, gained its independence from the UK in 1960.
Rishi Sunak was elected as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, October 24, 2022. Liz Truss preceded him and worked as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the shortest tenure in the history of the office.
Truss assumed office on September 6 after asking the then-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, for permission to form a government in her name.
Mary Elizabeth Truss stayed in the office of the Prime Minister for less than two months before she was asked to resign from her post, owing to the nation’s deteriorating economy under her leadership.
The former chief of the treasury, Rishi Sunak, had contested the Prime Ministerial elections in September, which he had been unable to win at the time.
Rishi Sunak is the first Prime Minister to form a government in the name of King Charles III. He met with the Monarch of England on Monday to ask for his permission to form his government in the king’s name.
