Nigeria: Man strangles girlfriend to death for aborting her pregnancy without his permission

A 29-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Douglas Tamunokopo, has allegedly killed his girlfriend for having an abortion without his consent.

A 29-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Douglas Tamunokopo, has allegedly killed his girlfriend for having an abortion without his consent.

The man is said to be already married but was having an affair with the deceased, and on knowing that the accused is already having a family with two children in the Rivers State of Nigeria, the victim aborted her pregnancy.

The victim has been identified as Udo Abigail.

The neighbours of Abigail became suspicious and went inside her room and saw that she was sitting on a chair, with rope hung on a nail on the wall and tied around her neck.

The neighbours filed a complaint, after which the accused was arrested and charged in court for the murder of Abigail.

The incident took place on September 1, 2016, around 3 pm, at the Mogadishu Barracks, Abuja.

The prosecutor, Wale Adeagbo, stated that the crime is punishable as per Section 221 of the Penal Code. However, the defendant argued not guilty to the charge.

The accused made the crime scene look like that of a purported suicide committed by his girlfriend.

Her dead body was after that moved to the National Hospital for further examination.

“On September 2, 2022, the accused was handed over to the police officials for additional investigation.”

According to Zephaniah, a postmortem examination was carried out on the body of the deceased. From the postmortem report, the cause of the death was found out to be asphyxia and strangulation caused by the defendant.

Justice Agbaza has adjourned the case for cross-examination on September 26, 2022.
