Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry shared ideas for how Nigeria can achieve a clean energy future, and adapt to increase resilience to the current and future impacts of the climate crisis, in his meetings with President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo on September 12 and 13.

He welcomed the Clean Energy Demand Initiative Letter of Intent between the Nigerian Government, represented by Minister for Environment Mohammed Abdullahi, and seven companies – ABInBev, Akamai, HP, Iron Mountain, Lady Lawyer Foundation, Rife International, and Unilever – to support the clean energy transition by working to procure clean energy in Nigeria.

Many of these companies are already working with their supply chain partners in Nigeria and confirm the desire to support their suppliers with clean energy procurement once suitable options are available.

This collaboration will help develop robust, reliable, transparent, cost-competitive, and credible procurement options that comply with labor laws in Nigeria to help meet clean energy targets, increase energy security, and enable corporations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Kerry also welcomed the letter of intent signed by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mohammed Abubakar for Nigeria to become the newest government partner in th AIMforClimate initiative, which will help Nigeria to catalyze climate-smart agriculture innovation that can increase resilience, productivity, and food security for all.
