Armed men in Nigeria have killed five aides, including security personnel, in an attack on the convoy of a Nigerian senator in the southeastern region of Anambra state on the evening of Sunday. The spokesman of the Senator have stated about the incident on Monday.

Ogbonna said he was in the same vehicle with Ubah at the time of the attack, which he described as an assassination attempt.

Meanwhile, police added that they were investigating the incident and would give an update later.

At the same time, unknown gunmen have been responsible for a series of attacks on politicians, security forces and government targets in the southeastern region, where separatists are agitating for secession.

The government has put the blame on outlawed separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the attacks and other criminal activities in the region. IPOB denies the charge and says it seeks non-violent means to achieve its aims.

According to local media reports, over 100 police officers along with other security personnel have been killed since the starting of last year in targeted attacks in the region.

Prisons have also been raided with scores of inmates freed and weapons stolen. Local offices of the national electoral authorities have also been targeted for attacks.
