The University of Abuja has introduced a new policy on sex abuse on campus, which has been authorised, and two professors have also been dismissed for carrying out this offence.

Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na-Allah, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, says that the institution has gone hard on lecturers who sexually harass students.

Na-Allah, who was on a two-day visit to the United States to meet with the University of Abuja Alumni Association, USA, to request support for the institution, said that female pupils need to be protected.

The institution is dedicated to providing high moral standards and will not take any action against misconduct committed by its staff against pupils.

He stated, “I have dismissed two teachers since I became the vice-chancellor. It tells you how we are rigid about the issue of sexual harassment.”

“We are collaborating with some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to make sure that it is not only us that are handling this issue, but we have a strong collaboration.”

He said that most of these incidents destroy the lives of children, and the University will not allow anyone to destroy the lives of its students.

It was sad to see some professors, who are supposed to be guarding the female students, become one of their problems. This problem is not only in Abuja alone but in all the universities of Nigeria.

But the University of Abuja is handling the issue with rigidness to make the University the best one in Nigeria.

He said that the University is partnering up with the University of Arizona, US, as it has a large virtual system, and the University is looking for online programmes with the University.

The University of Abuja is a tertiary establishment in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, founded in January 1988, as a dual-mode University, with the order to run conventional and distance learning programmes.
