The Lagos State government has collaborated with Finland to enhance the comprehensive school programme launched in 2022.

A statement from the Ministry of Education said that through the ministry and in collaboration with the Government of Finland, the state had recently sent a group of chosen teachers and coordinators to the programme on a two-week training period at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) in Finland.

The statement also highlighted that in this time (April 18 to May 1) this year, the group was engaged in the workings of an education system that is ranked the best worldwide.

The purpose was to pick up on teaching strategies and methodologies which could be integrated in the state’s comprehensive school programme for the best possible outcome.

A teacher from Lagos Education District I, Adebayo Sodiq, along with his colleagues, saw innovation first-hand when he sat during a project presentation about recycling plastic to make earrings, rings and other items at Ylojarvi Upper Secondary School.

He stated, “I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the students and the apparent depth of their know-how. It was also an eye-opener on how understanding can move from the pages of textbooks into practical and useful purposes.”

He further said that it is a testament towards the flexibility of an education system where all students are acclimated to leaving no dead-end in this system. This is equivalent to the aim of the Lagos Comprehensive Schools Programme and provides a precise equivalent in the Finnish JOPO Programme, which is formed to help struggling learners regain inspiration and avert dropout.

Additionally, Bunmi Abiloye, an Education District VI Tutor, stated, “JOPO is like a mirror image of our comprehensive schools’ programme, it is only immense. It has activity-based features and on-the-job learning, individual learning plans, along with school camps, study visits, field trips, internships and team building that will help boost and improve our scope.”
