Nigeria: NFF appoints Jose Santos Peseiro as new coach of Super Eagles

José Santos Peseiro has been declared as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, the country's senior men's national team, by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

The NFF declared the appointment on Sunday, May 15, saying his position is with immediate effect but subject to the signing of agreed terms between the football federation and the coach.

The NFF stated that Peseiro, aged 62, will be taking charge of the Super Eagles starting with friendlies with Mexico and Ecuador in May later.

However, it failed to reveal the tenure of the appointment of the Portuguese coach.

Peseiro has earlier coached clubs and national teams in four continents, Asia, Europe, Africa and South America.

He has served as a coach at Panathinaikos, FC Porto, Al-Ahly Cairo, Rapid Bucharest, Victoria Gumaraes, Sharjah FC, Sporting Lisbon, Al-Hilal, Al-Wahda, Sporting Braga, Real Madrid (assistant coach during the Galacticos era). He has also worked as Head Coach of the Saudi Arabian and Venezuelan national teams.

Peseiro is expected to head the Super Eagles for the first time against Mexico at the AT & T Stadium located in Dallas, Texas, on May 28.

From there, the team will travel to New Jersey to face Ecuador at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison on June 2, Thursday.

The NFF also declared that former Nigeria international forward Finidi George had been appointed as the first assistant to Peseiro, with Salisu Yusuf as his second assistant and Head Coach of the CHAN and U23 National teams.

Usman Abdallah has been selected as the Third Assistant while Eboboritse Uwejamomere will be the Match Analyst, and another former Nigeria international, Ike Shorounmu, will serve as the Goalkeepers’s Trainer.

Augustine Eguavoen has been succeeded by Peseiro, who did not qualify the Super Eagles for the World Cup 2022 held in Qatar.
