LAGOS — A major road accident involving two commercial buses and a Lexus 330 Jeep occurred yesterday in Lejina, inward Adamo, along the Sabo-Itokin Express Road in Lagos, leaving several passengers injured.
According to preliminary findings from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash was caused by the driver of the Lexus Jeep, with registration number KSF 879 JR, who attempted a reckless overtaking maneuver.
Witnesses report that upon sighting an oncoming truck in the opposite lane, the driver of the Jeep tried to swerve back into his lane but lost control of the vehicle. This resulted in a devastating collision with two fully loaded commercial buses.
The driver of the Lexus Jeep reportedly fled the scene immediately after the accident, leaving behind a trail of injured victims and mangled vehicles.
Swift Emergency Response
LASTMA personnel, in collaboration with security operatives from the Area ‘N’ Police Division, promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, confirmed that their officers swiftly secured the accident site, ensured the smooth flow of traffic, and coordinated the evacuation of the wrecked vehicles to restore normalcy.
“All injured passengers were urgently conveyed to the General Hospital in Ikorodu for immediate medical attention by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS),” Taofiq stated.
LASTMA Urges Motorists to Exercise Caution
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims and wished them a speedy recovery. He also used the opportunity to caution motorists against reckless driving, particularly when overtaking on highways.
“Government has strategically positioned road signs to guide motorists and ensure orderliness on our highways. It is imperative that drivers exercise utmost vigilance and confirm absolute clearance before attempting to overtake, as recklessness on the road can have devastating consequences,” Bakare-Oki emphasized.
He urged all drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and be mindful of other road users to prevent similar accidents.
Growing Concerns Over Reckless Driving
This latest incident adds to the growing concerns about reckless driving and road safety in Lagos. The Sabo-Itokin Express Road has witnessed multiple accidents in recent months, many of which have been attributed to dangerous overtaking, speeding, and disregard for traffic rules.
Authorities continue to advocate for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, increased road safety awareness, and responsible driving to curb the high incidence of road crashes.
Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to track down the absconded driver of the Lexus Jeep to ensure accountability.
