LAGOS – The Lagos State Government has issued an early warning about an above-normal rainfall pattern for the 2025 rainy season, with a delayed cessation that could extend into December.
The state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the forecast during the Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) press briefing held in Alausa. He emphasized that Lagos would witness “a longer-than-usual rainy season, beginning in late March and ending in early December.”
In a post on X on Sunday, Wahab reiterated the state’s preparedness to handle the expected heavy downpours, urging residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions.
Prolonged Rainy Season and Heavy Precipitation
According to the SCP forecast, the rainy season in Lagos is expected to commence as early as the last week of March and persist until early December. The predicted annual rainfall amount for 2025 is approximately 1,936mm, surpassing the long-term average recorded between 1991 and 2020.
“The average annual rainfall amount predicted is 1,936mm, which is greater than the long-term 1991–2020 average,” Wahab stated.
The forecast is based on the neutral phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is expected to persist for the first six to eight months of the year. ENSO is a significant climatic factor influencing global weather patterns, including rainfall distribution.
Impact Across Lagos and Ogun State
Wahab noted that Lagos, along with its neighbouring Ogun State, would experience an increase in rainfall levels. Several key areas, including Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe, are projected to receive above-normal precipitation.
“For instance, Ikeja is expected to have an onset date of April 2 and a cessation date of December 2, with an annual rainfall amount of 1,900mm,” Wahab stated.
“Badagry will see its first rains on March 30 and end on December 4, with 1,978mm of rainfall,” he added.
Government’s Call for Preparedness
With the prolonged rainy season forecasted, Wahab urged Lagos residents to take proactive measures to prevent flooding and other climate-related challenges.
The government, he said, is ramping up efforts to ensure adequate drainage maintenance, waste management, and flood mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.
“Residents must avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, which clogs drainage channels and contributes to urban flooding. The government is committed to ensuring that our drainage systems are properly cleared, but we also need public cooperation,” Wahab said.
In previous years, heavy rainfall in Lagos has led to flash floods, property damage, and disruptions to transportation networks. The government is expected to implement additional strategies to mitigate these risks, including early warning systems and emergency response measures.
As Lagos prepares for an extended and intense rainy season, officials have advised residents to stay informed, adhere to weather alerts, and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
