Lafia, Nasarawa State — The Federal University of Lafia has been severely affected by flooding following a week-long downpour in the Nasarawa State capital. Several lecture halls at the institution have been submerged, leaving students stranded and unable to access their classes.
The heavy rains, which began over a week ago, have caused significant disruptions at the university, with floodwaters reaching alarming levels on the campus. On Friday, students gathered at the school gate, unable to enter their classes due to the inundation that has impacted multiple parts of the university premises.
Mr. Felix, a student who spoke to Arewa PUNCH, expressed frustration and concern over the situation. “We are unable to attend lectures because of the flooding which affected many of our lecture halls,” he said.
“The rains have actually been heavy for some days now, but we want to appeal to the school management to help us on the matter so that we won’t have to be absent from classes in the future because of the floods.”
Felix further criticized the location of some of the university’s buildings, which he believes were constructed in swampy areas prone to flooding. He urged the Federal Government to deploy a team of land surveyors to address the persistent flooding issues affecting the university community.
In response to the crisis, the Nasarawa State Government has initiated measures to address flood-related issues in tertiary institutions across the state.
The State Commissioner for Special Duties on Humanitarian Services and NGOs, Margaret Elayo, inspected the multi-purpose hall of the Faculty of Arts at the Federal University of Lafia on Monday. The hall had been completely submerged by the recent flooding.
Elayo assured that the state government is committed to mitigating the effects of floods and working towards long-term solutions. “The recent heavy rains have highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive flood management strategies,” she stated. “We are assessing the situation and will take necessary actions to prevent future occurrences.”
The flooding at the Federal University of Lafia highlights the broader challenges faced by many institutions in flood-prone areas.
As the rains continue, the university administration and state authorities are under increasing pressure to implement effective measures to safeguard educational infrastructure and ensure the safety and continuity of academic activities.
