ABUJA — The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) will on Monday officially unveil the Nigeria Tax Reform Acts during a high-level stakeholder engagement session in Abuja, marking a significant step toward simplifying the country’s tax system and improving revenue efficiency.
Themed “Impact of the New Tax Laws,” the event will bring together senior government officials, policymakers, tax experts, development partners, and private sector representatives to discuss the implications of the reforms for taxpayers, businesses, and the broader economy.
In a statement signed by Dr. Lovette Ononuga, Director of Taxpayer Services at the FIRS, the engagement is aimed at strengthening public understanding of the reforms and promoting collaboration among stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of the new laws.
According to Dr. Ononuga, the unveiling marks a milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to build a tax system that is simpler, fairer, and more transparent. She noted that the reforms are designed to encourage voluntary compliance, foster investment, and support long-term economic growth.
“The Nigeria Tax Reform Acts represent a key step toward modernizing our tax framework,” she said. “This engagement is part of our commitment to ensure Nigerians understand what the reforms mean for them and how to benefit from them.”
The reforms are expected to address longstanding issues in Nigeria’s tax administration, including multiple taxation, low compliance rates, and lack of transparency. By simplifying the tax process and strengthening accountability, the government aims to boost investor confidence and attract both domestic and foreign investments.
Key speakers at the session will include Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms; Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru, former Executive Chairman of the FIRS and CEO of Compliance Professionals; Matthew Gbonjubola, Coordinating Director at FIRS; and Tayo Koleoso, Chief of Staff at FIRS.
A high-level panel discussion will also feature Amina Ado, Kabir Abba, Matthew Gbonjubola, Michael Ango (Executive Chairman of the FCT-IRS), and Olumide Esan, a Partner at Deloitte.
The session will focus on practical implementation, expected impacts on businesses, and strategies for improving revenue collection while maintaining fairness. Stakeholders anticipate that the reforms will streamline tax administration, reduce compliance costs, and contribute to Nigeria’s fiscal stability.
