The Roost Foundation, an NGO in Nigeria, says it is working on the capacity building of relevant stakeholders so they can prove helpful in enlisting others in the fight against drug trafficking, abuse and human trafficking.
Dame Julie Okah-Donli, The Founder and Executive Chairperson of the foundation, said this at a two-day workshop conducted on Outreach on Drug and Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign in Abuja.
During the event, She recalled that the foundation carried out a survey through which they learned that Mpape Community was an endemic area in the Federal Capital Territory. The outreach awareness campaign team is visiting the region on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
Okah-Donli is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees in the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons.
Okah-Donli states, “This training programme is timely and is not put in place only to enlist you into this movement against drug trafficking and abuse but an invitation to enlarge your capacity to enlist others into this fight.”
She urged the people not to hoard the knowledge and experiences they are gaining but spread it among others and train them with the help of this knowledge.
“Seek and seize every opportunity to spread the information about this act of man’s inhumanity to man.” She stated further
She hopes the workshop would lay the foundation to mobilise and sustain partnerships for effective combat on drug and related crimes like human trafficking in every part of Nigeria and beyond.
Director of the Drug Demand Reduction in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Dr Ngozi Maduekwe, said that the agency was working on completely cutting off the availability of drugs in the country.
Maduekwe stated that they had done this with the help of intelligence by ensuring drug traffickers were arrested and prosecuted.
He stated that we seize their drugs and get them destroyed.
That is cutting off the availability of drugs.
Maduekwe further said the agency has also carried out awareness campaigns on drug abuse and educated youths and children who were not involved in any drug against the menace.
