Following the death of Jo Mersa, Jamaican Artist and Raggae artist, The Executive Editor of REPORT AFRIQUE International, Comrade Phils, shared a post on his social media account. In the post, he shared his observations on the handling of the incident by the media. He observed that Jo Mersa died (Tuesday, December 27), and most news headlines hardly quote his name. On the contrary, the media across the globe mentioned his grandfather’s name.

He observes, thus, that the weight of a name matters. Be it a family name or even a brand name. People identify with names or brands that have distinguished themselves in some ways. So also is anything that is tied to such names.
To further clarify, Comrade Phils’ social media post mentions names like Dantata, Dangote, Otedola, Mandela, Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Sankara, Ojukwu, Jaja of Opobo, Henry The VIII…names that carry weight.
He further writes that when you leave a good name, it transcends to unborn generations. It sets a pedestal of success for them. They inherit greatness that they did not build.
Meanwhile, When you leave a bad name, your unborn generations inherit everything bad that you have done. The world considers them guilty of crimes they never committed. They receive hatred for reasons they were not a part of.
He notes that This is life and that not everyone who is great comes from a famous lineage. He also says that not everyone born into a renowned family is great.
Comrade Phils further claims in the social media post that one can inherit greatness, but inheritance alone cannot sustain it. If you are lucky to inherit it, you are poised with the challenge to build on it. If you inherited none, you are the most fortunate. Build one for your generations unborn to inherit.
