The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two brothers for allegedly killing their sibling and burying him in a shallow grave within their compound in Oko community, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident has drawn widespread attention and raised concerns about domestic violence and family disputes.
The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, Nnaghe Itam, confirmed the arrest during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Awka on Monday.
According to Itam, the deceased, Chibuzor Okeke, had been accused of burglary and stealing by his brother, Chidiebere Okeke, and his cousin, Emebo Ogochukwu.
In what appears to be a tragic case of vigilante justice, Chidiebere and Emebo allegedly confronted Chibuzor and subjected him to severe physical assault.
Itam explained that the two suspects beat Chibuzor into unconsciousness, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead by medical staff.
“The two suspects, in order to cover up for the incident, dug a shallow grave in their compound and buried Chibuzor,” Itam said.
The police have taken the brothers into custody, and investigations are underway to establish the full details of the circumstances leading to the death.
The case highlights the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands, especially within families where grievances are escalated to violent extremes.
In a separate operation, the Anambra State Police Command also reported the successful rescue of four children who had been stolen from their parents in Bauchi State.
The children were allegedly sold to a buyer in Anambra, where they were found by the police. The authorities arrested four suspects in connection with the crime, including an illegal foster mother who played a pivotal role in the children’s trafficking.
The police revealed that the suspects confessed to their roles in the crime and detailed the steps taken to exploit and sell the children. One of the children has already been identified, and efforts are being made to reunite the child with their parents.
“The suspects confessed to the crime and narrated the role that each of them played,” Itam said.
The arrests in both cases serve as a stark reminder of the pressing need for greater vigilance within communities, as well as stronger enforcement of laws protecting children and preventing domestic violence.
The police are continuing to investigate both incidents, with plans to ensure justice is served for the victims involved.
